1. Working with brands!
You've probably seen your fair share of #ads on the platform and possibly even rolled your eyes as you scrolled past, but you may be surprised to learn that one simple ad can bring in hundreds or even thousands (yep, thousands!) of dollars. You don't even need to have a huge following to make money from a sponsored post. "Micro Influencers" can still bring in the big bucks if they build a engaging and niche community. In exchange for promoting a product or service, a brand will pay to be shared to the audience you've built up. Most of the time a company reaches out to me, but sometimes if I want to work with a specific company I'll reach out to them!
Tip: If you want to work with a certain type of brand you need to be posting content that fits those products in the first place. You can't just post photos of flowers and expect to get inquiries from clothing companies!
2. Selling your services.
The most common way to make money through Instagram is by selling your services. This includes personal trainers, nutritionists, life coaches, wedding videographers, newborn photographers, graphic designers, website builders, etc. While this can be a great way to build clientele, it's not a great long term business plan if you intend on expanding and scaling your business. The bottom line is that there is only one you and so many hours in the day, so offering services is a great way to build your expertise in an area but I don't recommend it as your sole income. However, Instagram is a fantastic way to promote your services and build your clientele!
Tip: If you do intend on offering your services (for example, individualized meal plans or hair appointments), make it a goal to do fewer and higher paying jobs. Treat your time like gold and charge accordingly.
3. Selling a digital product (whoohoo for passive income!)
This is probably the easiest and most lucrative way to make money on Instagram. People love your editing style? Sell your Lightroom presets. Followers want to know what workouts you do? Sell a fitness ebook. Getting requests about how to pose couples naturally on their wedding day? Write a posing guide. Questions about camping in National Parks? Create a travel guide on all your favorite U.S. spots. Typically digital products require a bit of effort at first but then are passive and automated as you market them on your platforms. I believe every Instapreneur should have some kind of digital product because it's just such an easy way to bring in extra income! Take a question you always get asked and turn it into a digital product you can sell.
Tip: You can sell digital products on almost any website such as Squarespace, Wix, Wordpress, Shopify (ideal if you plan on selling a lot of products), etc. Do some research to find what works best for you.
4. Create a course!
A step up from the regular digital products, courses are another amazing way to increase your passive income. You can create a course on anything from marriage advice, yoga and meditation, workouts, photography, how to oil paint, social media, or even life coaching. The possibilities are seriously endless, and if you're willing to put in the time it takes to build a course the rewards of it are huge.
Tip: Don't wait to be an expert on something before creating a course. You don't need to be the best. You just have to be ahead of your customers. You might be surprised about how much you actually DO know when you start writing it down!
5. Sell a physical product!
This is definitely the option that takes the most time and commitment, but if you are interested in really building your brand then a physical product may be the right way to go. Whether you sell swimsuits, tote bags, jewelry, camping gear, a cookbook, fitness equipment, supplements, hair accessories, beauty products, and so much more. If you don't want to create a whole new brand you may be able to collaborate with an existing brand on creating a collection or product that you personally market and receive commission from. For example, as a fitness influencer, you might create a workout gear collection with an activewear brand. As an artist you can sell your photos as prints, teeshirts, bags, etc using services such as Printful. If you open a Shopify you can also sell products (even ones that already exist!) through your storefront.
Tip: If you want to sell physical products, I recommend setting up an automated system instead of handcrafting or shipping things out yourself. You don't want to burn out from running an entire business on your own!
