Jordan

Once in a while your feet touch down in a place and you instantly feel home. The sights, the sound, the people. For some reason, they all feel familiar to you. You feel free and happy and like yourself.

That’s how Jordan made me feel.

Somehow I felt home in a country completely on the other side of the planet. A country opposite of my own, yet I totally fell in love with.

The people are some of the kindest you will ever meet, the scenery is surreal (and sometimes surprising, like the beautiful Red Sea!), and I could eat the food forever!

No words can do justice to how incredible Jordan was to me! So I’ll just share the best way I know how: through photos and stories. I hope you can feel like you’re there with me while you read. I truly believe hearts can soften and minds can open through stories. I know the middle east can seem like a scary place, but I had the opposite experience. I hope you enjoy reading my experience!

Special thanks to Visit Jordan for bringing me out there! I feel so grateful and lucky. Also thanks to @jameslloydcole for the images taken of me and @letsexplore.co for choosing me to come along.

We started out day 1 hiking Wadi Al Hasa! A gorgeous canyon that runs perpendicular to the Dead Sea. Before we started hiking these kids came up and wanted to play.

Watching the sun set over the Dead Sea was magical.

The next morning I woke up to this wonderful sight! We stayed at these beautiful hot springs in the middle of the desert! I looked out the window and saw the sun rising over steaming waterfalls and desert mountains dotted with palm trees. The food here was seriously amazing. You could eat on the deck that overlooked the falls and the chefs made you fresh pasta and kababs right before your eyes. Heaven!

At breakfast I made friends with this amazing couple, Mishael and Valleta! She was a Dutch archaeology student visiting Petra and saw Mishael and it was love at first site. She didn’t think he’d be interested because of the cultural difference, but then they kept bumping into each other! Now they’ve been married for two years, and she hopes to be able to take him to visit her home country one of these days. There are strict travel laws because of the situation with refugees in Europe, so they have to somehow overcome that. I hope for the best for them!

AHHH. The Dead Sea. So magical. So beautiful. So…. painful. Haha! The first time we floated in it was right as the sun was setting! The feeling of floating in there is so crazy surreal. You can barely put your legs down. But whatever you do, DON’T get it in your eyes. Not saying I did that.. but I might know a girl who did and she felt pretty dumb afterwards. Overall, it feels like you’re swimming in acid + baby oil. It kind of hurts, but is still so cool.

They loved Americans and many will offer what they have to a stranger.

Petra is almost 3000 years old – it was originally inhabited by the Nabataeans. This treasury was built for their god, who was originally their king. Later when other tribes moved in it became a treasury. The city was abandoned around 300AD after the Romans had taken over and an earthquake happened. It’s re-discovery by the Western world is relatively recent!

“We fear what we don’t know, and fear makes us irrational. I’m not even going to lie, there was a little part of me that felt nervous about coming to the Middle East. You hear so much on the news and opinions are strong on all sides of the earth. I won’t deny that there are some crazy terrible things happening in the world, but this land has more to offer than what we think. I have felt nothing but pure love and open arms since day one. And I feel like it’s important to let you all know that what we hear about a place isn’t always true. We have to remember that we are all human, and I hope we can decide today to always choose love and kindness over fear. In a short amount of time my heart has been changed more than I thought it could.”
